What is the Casper Test?

Casper is an online situational judgment test (SJT) developed by Acuity Insights (formerly Altus Suite). It is a required component of the admissions process for approximately 27 US medical schools and dozens of nursing, pharmacy, and graduate programs.

The test is approximately 65–85 minutes long and consists of 11 scenarios — 4 video response and 7 typed response. Each scenario has 2 open-ended questions. It assesses 9 non-academic competencies:

Collaboration · Communication · Empathy · Fairness · Ethics · Motivation · Problem-Solving · Resilience · Self-Awareness

Casper can only be taken once per application cycle. Choose your test date strategically — early enough to meet school deadlines, but after you've had adequate preparation time.

2026–2027 Test Windows

Test dates for the 2026–2027 cycle are released on a rolling basis by Acuity Insights. Dates typically span from March through February of each application cycle, with multiple time slots available throughout the year.

SeasonApproximate Window
SpringMarch – May 2026
SummerJune – August 2026
FallSeptember – November 2026
WinterDecember 2026 – February 2027

For confirmed, up-to-date test dates and available time slots, always check the official source:

⚠️ Important: Preferred time slots fill up quickly, especially in the May–August window. Register as early as possible to secure your preferred date.

Which Date Should You Pick?

Most medical school applications are due in June–October. Casper scores are sent to schools approximately 2–3 weeks after your test, so you need to account for that lag.

Rule of thumb: Take Casper at least 3–4 weeks before your earliest school application deadline.

Technical Requirements

Before you register, make sure you have:

  • A desktop or laptop computer (tablets are not supported)
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • Chrome or Firefox browser (only supported browsers)
  • Internet with at least 1.5 Mbps download / 2 Mbps upload
  • A backup connection ready (mobile hotspot recommended)

Scheduling Tips

Book early. Summer test dates (May–August) sell out the fastest. If you are applying for the Fall 2026 cycle, aim to book your test date by April or early May.

Check your school's specific deadlines. Each medical school sets its own Casper submission deadline, which may differ from the application deadline. Confirm requirements for every school on your list at acuityinsights.app.

Account for your timezone. Test times are displayed in EDT/EST by default. Confirm your local time before booking to avoid scheduling mistakes.

Register at least 3 days in advance. Acuity Insights requires minimum 3 days lead time for account verification and system requirements checks.

Before Test Day

1. Complete the System Requirements Check

At least 3 days before your test, log into your Acuity Insights account and complete the System Requirements Check (Step 1 in your dashboard). This verifies your webcam, microphone, browser, and internet connection are all compatible.

Do not skip this step — a technical issue on test day cannot be resolved in real time.

2. Practice Under Realistic Conditions

Take the official Practice Casper test (Step 2 in your dashboard) in your actual testing environment. Use the same computer, the same desk, at the same time of day as your real test.

3. Prepare Your Environment

  • Silence your phone and remove it from the room
  • Disable computer notifications
  • Inform housemates — ideally ask them to leave during the test
  • Prevent interruptions from pets, deliveries, or cooking smells that might trigger fire alarms

4. Test Your Internet

Run a speed test the morning of your exam. Ensure you have a backup connection (mobile hotspot) ready if your primary internet becomes unstable.
